Who we are

Nearly a century of trusted service to libraries

Founded in 1934 by art historian Dr. Abraham Horodisch, Erasmus began as an antiquarian bookshop in Amsterdam, quickly gaining international recognition for its expertise in art and art history. Over time, the business evolved from a specialist book dealer into a trusted library supplier, meeting the needs of academic, research, and professional libraries across a wide range of disciplines.

In 1990, to better source French-language publications, Erasmus opened a subsidiary office in Paris—Librairie Erasmus. This expansion allowed us to strengthen relationships with French and French-Swiss publishers and broaden the scope of our supply services.

Over the decades, Erasmus has consistently expanded its scope, supporting libraries of all types with firm orders, subscriptions, standing orders, and approval plans. In June 2023, Erasmus integrated Houtschild Internationale Boekhandel, bringing together two highly respected Dutch library suppliers with complementary expertise and long-standing reputations for reliability and service.

Since 2020, Erasmus has partnered with Casalini Libri, the leading academic book vendor and cataloguing agency in Italy, widely recognized for serving the global library community with Italian and Southern European publications. Together, we share a common vision of quality, innovation, and deep sector knowledge. This collaboration has enabled us to extend our reach, enhance our digital services, and offer even more comprehensive solutions to libraries around the world.

Our services

Global book supply, built for today’s libraries

Erasmus offers libraries worldwide a complete and versatile supply solution, covering academic, professional, and trade publications across all subject areas and formats. We work with thousands of publishers in the UK, USA, Europe, and Scandinavia to deliver books that support teaching, research, and institutional priorities. In addition to mainstream academic titles, we also excel in sourcing specialized materials such as art publications, exhibition catalogues, antiquarian books, and grey literature—items that are often difficult to find through standard channels.

Every Erasmus service is built with library workflows in mind. From bibliographic search and selection to ordering, invoicing, and record delivery, we ensure every stage is seamlessly integrated into your systems. Our departments work in close coordination to provide the data, formats, and support needed to streamline acquisitions from one-off purchases to complex ongoing supply models.
